Westminster Ed Sup Ctre
Description Westminster Education Support Centre(ESC) is located within the Westminster Primary School, approximately 10 kms north of Perth in the suburb of Westminster, which is within the New North development project. The ESC is one of three partner schools on site and caters specifically for students with special needs in Years 1 to 7. The Centre was established in 1985 and since then has acquired a strong reputation for meeting the needs of eligible students through individual education programs and reciprocal programs with our partner schools. We work closely with the other schools on site and cross set timetables so that reciprocal programs can be offered to mainstream students with particular needs. The Centre provides a safe, friendly student focussed learning environment offering various programs designed to develop students' needs - academically, socially and emotionally. The five teaching staff and 15 support staff demonstrate enthusiasm and dedication. All are committed to providing a purposeful and relevant educational program for each individual in our care. Our Beliefs and Values: At Westminster ESC we believe that all students are capable of learning and achieving individual outcomes. We support students by scaffolding concepts and adapting programs to give them the best opportunities to grow in confidence and to achieve at a level that is developmentally appropriate. Through individual programs we are able to move the students along their continuum of learning. With encouragement and support, students are able to participate in all learning areas and achieve their individual outcomes. By learning relevant life skills students are enabled to participate and contribute in the wider community with confidence and dignity. In 2010 there are 23 enrolled students, plus a small number of mainstream students who access the Mathematics and English programs during morning classes. Student attendance rates are good and surveys of parents and students indicate a high level of satisfaction with the ESC teaching and learning programs. Our Priorities for 2010 - 2012: The areas of Numeracy, Literacy and Social Skills continue to be an ongoing focus of the Centre's curriculum. In 2010 we will continue our focus on Functional Literacy and Numeracy; incorporate Information and Communication Technology across all learning areas; develop Self Management, Inter-Personal and Social Skills; and incorporate Music, Brain-Gym and Skills for Physical Activity into the weekly program. Highly structured, consistent behaviour management procedures are in place with respect for the individual requirements of the students. Staff are trained in behaviour management and utilise various strategies to ensure that all students and staff have access to a safe and supportive learning/working environment. Programs: Westminster offers a diverse range of programs to support our students which add real value to our centre and help make our school a great place to be. * Virtues program has enabled a significant decrease in the number of playground instances and also an improvement in self management skills in the classroom. * Healthy Eating and Living program providing students with knowledge and understanding to practise healthy living habits. * Therapy Focus: Small group and individual programs are provided for Speech Pathology, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. * Community Access / Outdoor Education Program allows students to access the community and develop social competencies. * Life Skills Program encourages social interaction and self management of behaviours. Providing opportunities to learn specific life and social skills, and concentrating on appropriate behaviour management. * LOTE Program - Auslan. Australian Sign Language was chosen due to its visual nature. Gesturing and signing is used to prompt students in all learning areas. * Rainbows Program - offering an opportunity for students to discuss personal concerns with a facilitator in a safe environment. * Music and Brain Gym * Art and Physical Education with mainstream peers. * WADSA - Disabled Sport competitions give all students the opportunity to be engaged in sporting activities. Decision Making and Consultation: Westminster ESC shares a P&C with the partner primary schools and recognises the valuable contribution of this small group of volunteers. We appreciate the input of our parents and recognise the importance of a strong school/parent partnership. At Westminster ESC we encourage the use of communication books and welcome informal meetings and phone conversations to assist in the education requirements of all students. Our School Council meets as required to participate in school decision making and planning processes. Regular collaboration and planning meetings involving staff, ensure effective delivery of plans and learning programs.
